The Diverse Self

My Life After Diagnosis

“The Diverse Self" reflects on my personal journey following my diagnosis with myopathy. Receiving such a diagnosis can be an overwhelming and emotional experience. Initially, there might be a wave of shock and disbelief as the reality of living with a chronic condition begins to set in.

As I began processing the news, feelings of anxiety and uncertainty about the future emerged. I found myself questioning authenticity and individuality, as well as the true meanings of acceptance and strength. It was then that I realized acceptance and strength arise at home, prompting me to embark on my exploration of what "home" means.

"The Diverse Self" painting series emerged as I navigated the complexities of myopathy. Through geometric abstraction, I articulate themes of identity, beauty, and resilience, using blue as both a personal and symbolic color for a deeper reflection on self-perception.

The geometric abstraction, bold shapes, and structured forms communicate the perception of disability through a lens that distorts and redefines traditional aesthetics of beauty.

The prominent use of blue resonates as a symbol of disability, representing themes of introspection, strength, and acceptance. Through vibrant colors and contrasts of blues, reds, and yellows, my work conveys a dynamic tension and dance between chaos, order and clarity, mirroring my journey of self-discovery.

By incorporating the flower element in my paintings parallels the symbolism used in the myopathy association's logo, emphasizing the delicate care needed for growth and resilience. The flower symbolism deepens the emotional perception of disability, inviting viewers to see beyond traditional aesthetics and appreciate the beauty in vulnerability.

The artworks challenge societal norms by deconstructing traditional notions of identity, questioning the ideals imposed by society. The ornate frames juxtapose modern abstraction with classic elegance, enhancing the dialogue between past conventions and contemporary expressions. My art compels viewers to engage with themes of authenticity and individuality, offering personal reflection and universal relevance amidst societal constructs.

"The Diverse Self" is an invitation to explore the diversity within ourselves and to embrace the authenticity that defines us all.
